My Mentors

Dr. Richard Tan

dr-tanDr. Richard Tan was a Taiwanese master acupuncturist and teacher.  He is the originator of his system of acupuncture called the Balance Method.  He completely changed the way I practice acupuncture.  In the early 1990’s I was living in Japan and was struck by a horrible facial pain condition called trigeminal neuralgia.  The pain felt like the left side of my face was on fire and was unrelenting.  Conventional medicine had no solution so I saw a Japanese acupuncturist.  He inserted several needles into my opposite hand and the pain instantly reduced by 90%.  It seemed unbelievable to me.  However, when I went through my Chinese medicine schooling I never learned this type of acupuncture.  The techniques I learned in school seemed weak in comparison and lacked the immediacy and consistency of what I had experienced.  I was so disillusioned after a couple years of practice that I was considering quitting.

That’s when I met Dr. Richard Tan.  He taught acupuncture in its truest sense, not the dumbed down version systematized by the Communists after the Cultural Revolution, which is what is currently taught in the schools.  He showed me how to get instant results that led to permanent healing.  I studied with him every year for a decade.  I learned all I could about the Balance Method style of distal acupuncture and the methods of Tung style acupuncture.  He was a charismatic, funny, and unparalleled in his skill as an acupuncturist and teacher.  I would not be in practice today if it were not for the teachings of Dr. Richard Tan.  He passed away in early 2016.

I will miss you, Dr. Tan.  I am eternally grateful for your teachings.
